About The task was to design Chapman University ‘s “State of the University” poster for 2023. That year’s design was intended showcase the brand new “Sandi Simon Center for Dance.”

The final piece focuses on the concept of light, movement and space—themes that tell a story about the new center’s thoughtful architecture and it’s influence on dance.

 SANDI SIMON DANCE CENTER

One of the main goals was to create a visual solution that tells a story of excellence. The shadow of the dancer is posed in
a beautiful and strong position to show the caliber of Chapman’s dance program and the poise of our dancers.

Warmth and light is captured in the wood paneling in which the dancer’s shadow is projected on . This was intended to capture the openness of the space and welcome dancers into it. There is a nod to the Chapman fenestra from the window of light creating the dancer’s shadow. The fenestra is the university’s symbol for the window of opportunity, which is speckled throughout all of Chapman’s infrastructure and branding. Thus it was represented in this poster for the Sandi Simon Center for Dance as it is one of many windows of opportunities for students on campus. The process for creating this poster involved research of the physical building, which served as the primary source of visual inspiration. Shapes, color, and typography were all drawn from the physical space, for example, using the same typeface for as the ones used for the building’s signage as the main type for the poster text. Sketches of the final design were finalized in Illustrator.
